Preparing for Bariatric Surgery: Your Pre-Op Checklist

Once you've decided on weight-loss surgery, the weeks leading up to it are busier than most people expect — and that's a good thing. Every step in the pre-op process is designed to keep you safe and set you up to succeed. Knowing what's coming turns a long checklist into a clear, manageable path. Here's what preparing for surgery actually involves.

The medical workup

Before surgery, your team builds a complete picture of your health. Depending on your situation, this typically includes lab work, a cardiology evaluation and clearance (often with an EKG and stress test), an upper endoscopy (EGD), a chest X-ray, and sometimes a colonoscopy if you're over 50 without a recent one. You'll also complete a psychological evaluation and meet with a dietitian for education. It can feel like a lot, but each piece reduces risk and tailors the plan to you.

Preparing your body

A few lifestyle steps make a real difference. If you smoke, stopping before surgery is essential — it significantly improves healing and lowers complication risk. Gentle daily movement, good hydration, and steady sleep all help your body arrive at surgery in the best possible shape.

Preparing your mind

The mental prep matters as much as the physical. Take time to understand the changes ahead, picture your new daily routine, and lean into the mindfulness tools we share — they'll serve you long after surgery. Going in calm, informed, and committed sets the tone for recovery.

Logistics: the practical prep

Handle the everyday details early so the days around surgery are low-stress: arrange time off work, line up a ride home and support for the first days, stock your kitchen with the liquids and protein you'll need for the early diet stages, and set up a comfortable recovery space. A little planning now means more rest later.

The day before

Your team will give you specific instructions — when to stop eating and drinking, which medications to take or hold, and what to bring. Follow them exactly, get a good night's sleep, and know that the hardest decision is already behind you.

You won't do it alone

Every step here comes with guidance from your care team. If anything feels unclear or overwhelming, that's exactly what we're here for — to walk you through it, one item at a time.
