Life After Surgery
The first week after bariatric surgery: a calm, honest guide
Week one is mostly about hydration, rest, and rebuilding trust with your body. You will feel tired, occasionally emotional, and sometimes a little disoriented. All of that is normal. Individual results vary, but here is the rhythm most of our patients settle into.
Days 1–2 at home
- Sip clear liquids every 15 minutes — small, constant, never gulping.
- Walk every hour you’re awake, even just to the kitchen and back.
- Sleep when your body asks. Healing is mostly a night-shift project.
Days 3–5
Energy returns in uneven waves. Protein shakes become your anchor — aim for 60–80g of protein and 64+ oz of fluid daily, sipped slowly. Many patients notice mild dumping or nausea if liquids are taken too fast.
Days 6–7
Many patients feel meaningfully better by the end of week one. Showers feel restorative. Walks get longer. Sleep deepens. If something feels off — sharp pain, fever, or persistent vomiting — call us. We would always rather hear from you early.
